At the tender age of eight I was introduced to the concept of death via a car accident I had no business surviving. That moment opened my eyes to a whole world of possibilities and concepts I still explore to this day. I took interest in the cycle of life and time, relating the cycle of the seasons to life, death, and rebirth. Time, however, proved to be my most adverse avocary. Time is what makes or breaks a person; time acts as the seasons for humankind. With time we grow, we change, we fall, and we get back up again. No one is the same at the beginning of a journey as they are at the end. What happens when we run out of time? The answer is simple; we don’t. We live on through actions.

Human Nature is an exploration of time and nature through my subjects' very identity, their thumbprints. Twelve thumbprints were taken from people close to me, or people that I wished to become closer to and they became my canvas. A tarot reading of each individual bore the names of each piece, and from there I attempted a form of automatism. The tarot reading was an attempt to form word association with each individual and to gain a better understanding of them that I couldn’t physically see. I didn’t want to know what each portrait would look like before I began the piece. I let my hands move as I created each piece and let my mind wonder why. Why is Communication a cross and a wedding band? Why is Discovery a butterfly landing on a flower? Why do I feel that each of these illustrations represents the person behind the thumbprint? This sense of wonder I felt creating these pieces is what I hope peaks the viewer’s interest.

I have chosen to keep the identities of those behind each thumbprint anonymous as I want the audience to question each piece as if they themselves are the subject of the piece. I want the owners of the many thumbprints taken for this process to ask themselves why each and every one of these artworks is a reflection of themselves and why I believe that this is a visual representation of them as people.
